About Us

AHSA - The Essence of the Southwest

AHSA – the Association of Horticulturists, Fruit Growers and Florists of the Municipalities of Odemira and Aljezur – was founded in 2004 by a group of companies operating within the Mira Irrigation Perimeter (PRM). Operating across an area of 12,000 hectares approved for agriculture within the PRM, only 58% of this area is currently being used for agricultural purposes, 33% of which is dedicated to horticulture and fruit growing, and only 12.5% involves any form of protected cultivation.

AHSA has around 40 member companies which, through their commitment to quality and efficiency, have developed a strong export focus, operating not only in the domestic market but also in the most demanding markets across Europe. These are successful companies that adhere to rigorous operational standards, not only technically but also environmentally and socially. They are certified to the most demanding standards and are committed to ensuring the well-being of their employees and local communities, as well as to conducting their activities in a way that promotes the environmental sustainability of the region in which they operate.

Challenges and Goals

AHSA operates in a demanding and constantly changing agricultural environment. Among the main challenges we face are:

As nossas metas passam por fortalecer a sustentabilidade ambiental, melhorar continuamente as condições sociais, promover inovação e assegurar que o setor agrícola da região continue a ser um motor económico responsável e exemplar.

The Territory

AHSA operates within the Mira Irrigation Perimeter, an agricultural area covering 12,000 hectares, of which 58% are currently in use, with a particular focus on fruit and vegetable growing and protected cultivation.

This region is one of the economic drivers of south-western Alentejo and a shining example of cultural diversity, innovation and resilience.

Strategic Partnerships

AHSA is involved in partnerships that reinforce our commitment to social responsibility, sustainability and the efficient management of resources:

Partner of the OIM in the project “Promoting Sound Management of Labour Migration to Portugal”.

Member of the Water Management Pact, an initiative promoted by Católica-Lisbon.

Active collaboration with social consortia in the region, contributing to initiatives that have an impact on the community.

These partnerships strengthen our role in building a more ethical, sustainable and inclusive agricultural sector.
